RIGHT OF WAY EFFECTS OF CONTROLLED ACCESS TYPE HIGHWAY ON A FARMING AREA IN COLORADO AND FAYETTE COUNTIES, TEXAS

THE OBJECTIVES ARE TO DETERMINE: (1) THE EFFECTS OF RIGHT OF WAY ACQUISITION FOR INTERSTATE 10 ON THE CHANGES OF LAND USE, NUMBER OF FARM UNITS, TENURE AND OPERATION SCOPE, (2) THE COST OF ADJUSTMENTS TO NEW FARMING OPERATING CONDITIONS AND CHANGES IN FARM INCOME CAUSED BY DECREASING FARM ACREAGE AND DIVISION OF UNITS INTO SEPARATE TRACTS. INFORMATION WAS GATHERED BY INTERVIEWS FROM OPERATORS FROM AREAS ALONG THE HIGHWAY AND AREAS OUTSIDE OF HIGHWAY INFLUENCE. THE LATTER GROUP SERVED AS A CONTROL GROUP. THE INFORMATION COVERED BEFORE (1964), DURING (1965), AND AFTER (1969) THE COMPLETION OF THE NEW FACILITY. INFORMATION WAS GATHERED FROM EACH OPERATOR CONCERNING HIS OVERALL FARMING AND LIVESTOCK OPERATIONS. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE TAKING OF RIGHT OF WAY FOR INTERSTATE 10 HAD A SHORT TERM EFFECT ON FARM OPERATIONS, BUT AFTER A FEW YEARS TO ALLOW FOR ADJUSTMENTS, THE OPERATORS AS A WHOLE MADE NOTICEABLE GAINS IN INCOME FROM AGRICULTURE. NO MAJOR CHANGES IN LAND USE OR TENURE COULD BE ATTRIBUTED TO THE HIGHWAY. TRAVEL PATTERNS OF LOCAL OPERATORS WERE CHANGED VERY LITTLE BY THE LIMITED ACCESS TYPE HIGHWAY. /AUTHOR/
