Shortening Signal Control Delay by Prediction of Traffic Demand

This paper introduces a real-time signal control based on the predicted traffic demand flowing in a signalized intersection to shorten the signal control delay. The Tokyo metropolitan police department (MPD) controls signals to ease the traffic congestion based on the parameters such as cycle and split. These parameters are obtained from the data of vehicle detectors immediately. But the signal control delay occurs for sending and receiving the data and calculating the parameters. The MPD introduces the new signal control based on the predicted traffic demand to shorten the delay more as well as increasing the computer speed.
