Stimulus Jump-Starts A&E Projects

According to major airport architectural and engineering (A&E) firms, specific airport landside improvement projects have been jump started by federal stimulus funds made available in 2009, despite the recession pushing back improvement plans at many airports. There is not a notable demand for larger or expanded airport facilities due to the reduction in airline capacity, according to one A&E source, but there are continued projects in reconstruction, safety, and future project planning. Stimulus funds have created a surge in activity in second-tier and mid-sized commercial airports. Project emphasis is on sustainability, flexibility, technology, passenger convenience, seamless transition, and value-added services.
