Bike-Sharing Goes Viral

The bicycle sharing program in Paris, called Vélib, has inspired many other bicycle sharing programs globally in its first two years of operation. This article summarizes the history of bicycle sharing programs and provides an overview of five new bike-sharing systems that have launched in the past year. The programs are located in: Hangzhou, China; Wuhan, China; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Montreal, Canada; and Mexico City, Mexico. These programs, although are located in very different cities, share the basic components of the Velib system, including smart card electronic payment, bicycle tracking devices and extensive user information.
