TRANSPORT MODES AND TECHNOLOGIES FOR DEVELOPMENT

AN ECONOMIC APPRAISAL IS PRESENTED OF THE PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS OF VARIOUS TRANSPORT TECHNOLOGIES AND MODES AS THEY RELATE TO DEVELOPMENT, ESPECIALLY IN THE CONTEXT OF ALLOCATION OF SCARCE RESOURCES AMONG ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORT MEANS AND TECHNOLOGIES. IT IS SHOWN THAT DECISIONS ON CHOICE OF PRODUCTIVE TECHNIQUES SHOULD BE BASED NOT ON LABOR OR CAPITAL INTENSITY AS SUCH, BUT ON THE CRITERIA OF ECONOMIC OR COST EFFECTIVENESS. CHAPTERS COVER RAIL AND ROAD TRAFFIC, MOTOR VEHICLES, AIR CARGO, PIPELINES, WATER TRANSPORT, AND PASSENGER TRAVEL ON MECHANIZED MODES OF TRANSPORT. THE MAIN CONCERN IS THE COMPARATIVE COST AND PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DIFFERENT MODES OR TECHNOLOGIES OF TRANSPORT. AS SUCH CHARACTERISTICS ARE FAIRLY WELL KNOWN IN BROAD OUTLINE AS REGARDS CONVENTIONAL TECHNIQUES, EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN TRANSPORT. /AUTHOR/
