VEHICLE OPERATING COSTS IN REGARD TO VEHICLE SIZE AND TYPE AND ROAD CONDITIONS

PILOT STUDY WAS CONDUCTED TO EXAMINE THE FEASIBILITY OF A NATIONWIDE SURVEY TO ESTABLISH REPRESENTATIVE MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATING COSTS WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO VARIATIONS IN VEHICLE SIZE AND TYPE AND ROAD CONDITIONS. TAX-FREE VEHICLE OPERATING COSTS WERE DESIRED TO ENABLE COST-BENEFIT STUDIES TO BE CARRIED OUT WITH SOME RELIABILITY. ANALYSIS OF 300 VEHICLES SUPPLIED THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION: GROSS VEHICLE OPERATING COSTS, AND HIGHWAY COSTS. THE NEW ZEALAND POST OFFICE PROVIDED DATA FOR THE ANALYSIS OF CARS, VANS, AND TRUCKS. THE BP OIL COMPANY SUPPLIED INFORMATION ON TRUCK FUEL SYSTEMS. DATA ON COST ELEMENTS, COMPRISING FIXED COSTS AND RUNNING COSTS, WERE COMPILED. TABULATIONS ARE PRESENTED OF COSTS AND TAX-FREE COSTS; HIGHWAY COSTS ARE INCLUDED IN THESE TABLES. IT IS FELT THAT PRELIMINARY DATA PRESENTED CAN BE USED AS A GUIDE IN ASSESSING VEHICLE OPERATING COSTS. HOWEVER, THE AREAS ARE INDICATED WHERE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION IS REQUIRED.
