PROGRESS IN URBAN ECONOMICS: THE WORK OF THE COMMITTEE ON URBAN ECONOMICS 1959-1968 AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE FIELD

THE COMMITTEE ON URBAN ECONOMICS (CUE) WAS ORGANIZED TO: (1) ENCOURAGE ABLE SCHOLARS TO DO RESEARCH IN URBAN ECONOMICS, (2) STRENGTHEN UNIVERSITY EDUCATION IN URBAN ECONOMICS, (3) DETERMINE RELATIONSHIPS OF ECONOMICS WITH OTHER DISCIPLINES IN DEVELOPING A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF URBAN COMMUNITIES, (4) IMPROVE CAREER POSSIBILITIES IN URBAN ECONOMICS, AND (5) IMPROVE COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN SCHOLARS AND ACTION GROUPS SO THAT DECISIONS, BOTH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE, WITHIN URBAN CENTERS WOULD REST ON THE BEST POSSIBLE KNOWLEDGE. A HISTORY IS PRESENTED OF CUE AND THE EVALUATION OF ITS ACTIVITIES. THIS COMMITTEE HAS SEEMED TO SERVE AS AN IMPORTANT CHANNEL OF COMMUNICATION FOR THE UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENTS IN THE FIELD. CONTINUED EMPHASIS OF CUE FUNCTIONS NEED TO BE IN: (1) COMMUNICATION, (2) ESTABLISHMENT AND FURTHER ENCOURAGEMENT OF COMMUNICATION DEVICES, (3) DEVELOPMENT OF FEDERAL AGENCY SUPPORT, (4) EFFORTS TO ESTABLISH DATA SERIES, (5) EFFORTS TO DEVELOP SUPPORT FOR SOME OVERALL PROGRAMS, AND (6) EFFORTS TO AUGMENT SUPPORT FOR SPECIALIZED PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT.
