Progress Toward the Practical Use of Vehicle Infrastructure Cooperation Systems (DSSS)

National Police Agency (NPA) of Japan has been developing a Vehicle-Infrastructure Cooperation System for road safety, which is called Driving Safety Support Systems (DSSS). The purpose of DSSS is to prevent traffic accidents by providing drivers with audible and visual information concerning potential risks such as pedestrians crossing the intersection, other vehicles approaching the intersection, etc. The R&D of DSSS was started by NPA and the Universal Traffic Management Society of Japan (UTMS Japan), which is an organization to promote ITS. In this paper, the development of DSSS is reviewed. In addition, the future vision of DSSS is discussed.
