Melbourne’s Incident Recording System Trial

This paper describes how VicRoads trialed an Incident Recording System (IRS) in Melbourne, Australia. The IRS has been developed and trialed to benefit the road safety analyst to provide another tool in the analytical toolkit to investigate the real reasons for crashes and be in a better position to make recommendations for road safety improvements if required. The Incident Recording System can record video and can save footage if it detects that a collision or near miss has occurred. Footage can be captured prior, during and after the incident has occurred and can be linked to the VicRoads Traffic Management Center.
