Cooperative Situation Refinement for Vehicular Safety Applications: The SAFESPOT Approach

In this paper the exploitation of wireless communications for enhancing the situation awareness of the driver is highlighted. The situation around the vehicle is analyzed based on information coming from both on-board sensors and wireless messages. Each equipped vehicle broadcasts every 500 ms a message comprising information about its global position (WGS84), velocity, yaw rate and other useful parameters. This information combined with advanced digital map data can be proved very useful for vehicular safety applications. The work described here is part of the work carried out for the European integrated research project SAFESPOT.
