Explaining International IT Application Leadership: Intelligent Transportation Systems
Embedding sensors and microchips into elements contained within the transportation system (such as traffic lights, roads, message signs, vehicles, etc.) enables communication among each element through the means of wireless systems. This is accomplished through information technology. Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) allow major improvements in transportation system performance, including increased traveler convenience and safety, and decreased traffic congestion. This report investigates the potential of ITS, points out the global leaders of ITS and offers reasons why they are the leaders, describes the reasons for the failure of the United States to lead in this area, and offers some recommendations for how the Administration and Congress can instigate sound ITS deployment.
