Performance Testing of Warm Mix Asphalt

Field trials utilizing HyperTherm(tm) warm mix asphalt technology were completed on ramps connecting to Ontario Provincial Highway 401 and on Garth Street in the City of Hamilton, Ontario. Polymer modified PG 64-28 asphalt cement with Superpave 12.5 mm FC2 mixes were utilized for the projects. Performance properties of plant produced field samples of warm mix and hot mix were tested and compared. It was found that both the warm mix and the hot mix had acceptable moisture sensitivity properties. The warm mix asphalt samples exhibited nominally higher but acceptable levels of rutting as tested with an Asphalt Pavement Analyzer. Flexural fatigue was found to be better for the warm mix asphalt samples than it was for the hot mix asphalt samples. (A)
