Adjusting Traffic Signal Timing in Inclement Weather

Research has found that inclement weather has a statistically significant impact on discharge headway, especially when slushy conditions develop or snow begins sticking to the pavement. Using several well-calibrated simulation models, researchers assessed the likely benefits of special traffic signal timing plans during inclement weather. They concluded that significant operational benefits could be achieved, especially when arterials are operating close to capacity and the duration of the inclement weather event increases.
