Automatic Tracking of Vehicles from a Time Sequence of Aerial Images and a Digital Map

Common methods of obtaining traffic information are to use fixed cameras and sensors. However, these methods are likely to be ineffective in the case of a disaster. Hence, aerial images can be used to solve this problem. This paper proposes a method of automatically obtaining traffic information over a wide area using a time sequence of aerial images taken along a road by a helicopter. Our approach begins with the automatic matching between aerial images and a digital map. The paper then extracts the location and behavior of vehicles by applying several image-processing methods to the images.
