Coordinated Ramp Metering: A Case Study with the HERO Algorithm

Coordination of ramp metering systems on entry ramps close to each other is likely to improve the effectiveness of ramp metering in postponing congestion on freeways. This paper describes a simulation experiment in coordinating ramp metering systems on part of the belt road of Amsterdam. The algorithm applied is based on the HERO algorithm, adapted to the Dutch installed base of ramp metering systems. The results show significant improvements over uncoordinated ramp metering, with good prospects for further improvements when some of the current limitations of the installed base will be overcome.
