Development of Database Solution for Prediction of the MEPDG Permanent Deformation

This research work focused upon the integration of the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) methodology (NCHRP 1-37A and NCHRP 1-40) with the Simple Performance Test (SPT) methodology (NCHRP 9-19) to develop a rutting Closed Form Solution (CFS) for AC layers to predict permanent deformation based on the HMA dynamic modulus. The CFS would take few seconds to predict rutting instead of the MEPDG 20 minutes runtime. The rutting CFS can then be implemented in a probabilistic Performance Related Specifications (PRS) methodology for the Quality Assurance (QA) of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) Construction (NCHRP 9-22). The main approach used to establish a rapid CFS for the AC MEPDG rutting distress module was to run the MEPDG for a large number of simulations using various combinations of inputs that are known to influence permanent deformation in the HMA layer; and to develop an accurate closed form solution for the rutting distress prediction based on the dynamic modulus of HMA. To accomplish this work two studies have been completed for the development of the rutting CFS: (a) development of a rutting database based for different structures, climatic locations, traffic and vehicle speed; (b) development of an AC effective dynamic modulus model (c) develop a dynamic modulus rutting relationship The developed methodology accurately predicts the rutting distress in the HMA layer that is close to that from the MEPDG. When compared to MEPDG version 1.0 rutting prediction an excellent correlation was obtained.
