THE IMPACT OF NEW TECHNOLOGY ON NORTHERN TRANSPORTATION

THE PURPOSE IS TO ASSESS THE IMPACT OF NEW DEVELOPMENT IN TRANSPORTATION TECHNOLOGY ON NORTHERN CANADA. THE PHYSIOLOGICAL FEATURES OF CANADA'S NORTH ARE DESCRIBED IN ORDER TO ESTABLISH A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROBLEMS OF TRANSPORTING PEOPLE AND GOODS IN THE NORTH. THE TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS IN THE DIFFERENT MODES OF TRANSPORTATION ARE REVIEWED WITH THE PURPOSE OF ASSESSING THEIR ADAPTABILITY TO THE NORTH. IN MANY CASES, THESE DEVELOPMENTS HAVE OCCURRED DUE TO A DEMAND IN OTHER AREAS AND ARE NOT PRACTICAL FOR NORTHERN USE. HOWEVER, THE STOL AIRCRAFT, THE TWIN OTTER AND THE SKYVAN WERE DEVELOPED SPECIFICALLY FOR OPERATION UNDER DIFFICULT ECONOMIC AND OPERATING CONDITIONS AND HAVE ACHIEVED CONSIDERABLE SUCCESS IN NORTHERN TRANSPORTATION. /RATAOC/
