THE DEVELOPMENT OF, AND PROSPECTS FOR, COMMERCIAL SUPERSONIC AVIATION

THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SUPERSONIC AIRCRAFT FOR COMMERCIAL PURPOSES INVOLVES TECHNICAL, POLITICAL, FINANCIAL AND ECONOMIC RISKS. AN EXACTING STANDARD OF ACHIEVEMENT IS ALREADY ESTABLISHED BY THE TECHNOLOGY OF THE SUBSONIC AIRCRAFT WITH WHICH THE SUPERSONICS MUST COMPETE. IN THE INITIAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE SST, THE TECHNOLOGICAL IMPERATIVE WAS THE MAJOR IMPETUS TO DEVELOPMENT. THE MASSIVE UNDERTAKING HAS CREATED INTERESTING INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION IN THE CASE OF THE CONCORDE, AND INTERESTING GOVERNMENT-INDUSTRY COOPERATION IN THE CASE OF THE BOEING 2707. IN SPITE OF TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES TO BE SURMOUNTED IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THESE AIRCRAFT, -- THE NECESSITY FOR TITANIUM OR STAINLESS STEEL CONSTRUCTION, OR SONIC BOOM, STUDIES UNDERTAKEN BY THE INSTITUTE FOR DEFENCE ANALYSIS AND THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION OF THE USA HAVE SHOWN THE SST TO HAVE CONSIDERABLE MARKET PROMISE. /CGRA/
