NEW APPROACHES TO TRANSPORT RESEARCH AND PLANNING

SOME OF THE MOSE INGENIOUS ADVANCES IN THE INCREASING SOPHISTICATION AND COMPLEXITY OF MODERN TRANSPORT ANALYSIS HAS BEEN REALIZED IN STUDIES FOR INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AGENCIES. THE REPORTS ARE NOT USUALLY AVAILABLE TO OUTSIDERS. A "STATE OF THE ART" REVIEW OF SUCH ADVANCES IS ATTEMPTED IN THIS PAPER. IN ORDER TO APPRECIATE THE "SYSTEMS ANALYSIS" TECHNIQUES AND APPROACH USED IN THESE STUDIES IT IS FIRST NECESSARY TO REVIEW THIS FIELD IN A CURSORY WAY. THE APPLICATION OF SYSTEMS ANALYSIS IS EXEMPLIFIED BY REFERENCE TO SEVERAL STUDIES- THE DAHOMEY LAND TRANSPORT STUDY, THE CANADIAN NATIONAL NETWORK MODEL, GRAIN TRANSPORTATION IN CANADA, THE TRANS CHACO HIGHWAY IN PARAGUAY, AND THE JAMAICA TRANSPORT STUDY. /CGRA/
