MnROAD Traffic Characterization for Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide Using Weigh-in-Motion Data

Weigh-in-motion (WIM) systems produce detailed traffic data including weight, classification, and volume. At least one WIM system has been operational at the MnROAD site since 1989. This study provided an example application of using WIM data to develop the required traffic inputs for the MEPDG. NCHRP Project 1-39 was established to develop a uniform process for collecting and processing traffic data for the MEPDG. The primary product from NCHRP Project 1-39 was a software package, known as TrafLoad, to uniformly process traffic data for the MEPDG; TrafLoad was used to characterize traffic at MnROAD for this project. The output files were successfully imported into the MEPDG and various design scenarios were evaluated. The MEPDG predicted distresses were found to be sensitive to the axle load spectra and the percentage of vehicles in the design lane. Further, the monthly adjustment factors were discovered to have moderate impact on the predicted distresses, whereas the axle groups per vehicle showed little influence on the predicted results. Finally, the hourly distribution factors appeared to be irrelevant for flexible pavements but proved to influence cracking in rigid pavements. In general, use of the MnROAD-specific traffic characteristics will lead to thinner structural pavement sections than with the MEPDG defaults, primarily because of the “lighter” load spectra and lower percentage of trucks in the design lane. These MEPDG design files could easily be modified to more accurately represent the materials characteristics at the MnROAD site. Application of the successful characterization of traffic and materials at the MnROAD site puts the Minnesota Department of Transportation in a great position to locally calibrate and implement the MEPDG.
