Low-Cost Vehicle Detection Based on Simple Light Sensing

This paper demonstrates the feasibility of using low-cost, wireless, light-sensor based devices to detect passing vehicles. The basic idea is to use the rough equivalent of upward-facing, single-pixel video cameras located on the roadway surface to relate changing light intensity to the presence of passing vehicles. Simple prototype devices have been developed in such a way as to allow for unobtrusive, inexpensive installation for pilot testing. Based on the outcomes of a series of fundamental test scenarios, it is evident that the approach is capable of high resolution vehicle detection across a range of environmental and traffic conditions.
