Resource-Efficient Approach to Trip Generation by Cross-classification

Small- and medium-sized Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) often choose between applying regression and cross-classification techniques when determining the number of trips generated in their communities. However, due to the costs of collecting and collating travel demand surveys, MPOs with limited resources generally decide to apply regression equations transferred from external sources. This decision may lead to travel demand model results that are not truly representative of the community. Instead, a synthetic approach based on nationally available data can be used to populate cross-classification tables, without having to perform costly travel demand surveys.
