Comparison of Environmental Benefits Between Satellite Scheduled Dispatching and Cruising Taxi Services

Taxis represent one of the major modes of public transportation in urban areas. Due to inefficient operation and over-supply of taxi market in Taipei Metropolitan, the public authority has encouraged taxi to be equipped with global positioning system/geographic information system (GPS/GIS) for implementation of automatic dispatching services. This paper aims to evaluate the environmental benefits of the GPS/GIS-based scheduled dispatching services compared with the conventional cruising services of taxi market. Analytic models for the two service types are formulated and used to conduct the comparison. It is shown that scheduled dispatching service can have a NT$135 (US$4.35) billions of energy saving per year in Taipei Metropolitan. Numerical results have also shown other external effects of scheduled dispatching service, including less air pollution, traffic accidents and traffic congestion.
