Numerical Analysis of Highway Bridge Approach Settlement and Proposed Improvements for Weak Foundation Soils

A bridge approach slab is commonly designed to provide a smooth transition between a bridge deck and the approach asphalt pavement. This transition is crucial in reducing the dynamic effects imposed on the bridge by traffic loads. The objective of this research is to numerically investigate road settlement at bridge approaches. A finite element model was utilized to simulate the complex interaction among the foundation soil, backfill soil, truck loads, approach slab, and bridge deck. The model included two different types of foundation soil; clay and sand. Different types of foundation soil ranging from very loose to very dense were considered in the model. Model results showed that the problem is very critical in case of soft-clay foundation soil.
