New Interchange Design: FRE Interchange Releasing Control and Enhancing Performance

In the analysis of nontraditional interchange treatments at narrow-bridged interchanges, a new interchange treatment design was developed. Simulation studies have been employed at two narrow-bridged sites in Tennessee with existing high volumes. A microscopic simulation model showed exceptional operation of the new treatment beyond all of the previously tested non-traditional interchange treatments as well as similar performances to bridge widening treatments. The Free Range Eagle Interchange operates at very high capacities across two-lane bridge facilities without significantly sacrificing driver experienced levels of service. The Free Range Eagle Interchange is a potential treatment that can extend the service life of existing two-lane over- and under-pass bridges at interchange locations while reducing driver experienced congestion.
