Quantifying Pavement Sustainability in Economic and Environmental Perspective

This paper discusses key findings about a sustainable pavement research at the center for Pavement and Transportation Technology of University of Waterloo with the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO). The ultimate goal of the study is to develop a practical framework to quantify sustainable pavement engineering practice with respect to Ontario road design, rehabilitation, and reconstruction. The focus of this paper includes 1) an analysis of environmental and economic savings for road construction or rehabilitation projects; 2) the development of MTO Green Pavement Rating System (MTO GPRS); 3) the results from project trial evaluations using MTO GPRS; and 4) sensitivity analysis and develop indicator that measures pavement sustainability. In essence, the analysis performed for this paper will ultimately address how pavement sustainability supports the decision-making process in the future engineering practice.
