THE COMPETITION AMONG SEVERAL TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS

THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS ARE CRITICALLY EXAMINED IN RELATION TO TRANSPORTATION IN BRAZIL' /1/ HEAVY LOADS AND LONG DISTANCES ASK FOR RAILWAY TRANSPORTATION, /2/ BEYOND A CERTAIN DISTANCE / PERHAPS 150 KM/ THE TRUCK CAN OFFER NO MORE ADVANTAGES, /3/ THE RAILWAY MUST ORGANIZE HOME DELIVERY , /4/ THE PIGGYBACK SYSTEM MUST BE INTRODUCED HERE, /5/ A PARALLELISM AMONG TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS IS INCOVENIENT AND BE AVOIDED, /6/ THE AIRPLANE MUST ONLY CARRY PASSENGERS AND NO LOADS, AND /7/ THERE IS NO SYSTEM THAT CAN COMPETE ECONOMICALLY WITH WATER TRANSPORTATION. THE AUTHOR SHOWS THAT THESE ASSERTATIONS, ALTHOUGH HAVING A CORRECT THEORETIC BASIS, ARE VERY RELATIVE AND VARY ACCORDING TO THE EXISTING CONDITIONS IN EVERY COUNTRY AND REGION AND ARE DENIED IN PRACTICE IN BRAZIL. THE COMPETITIVE CLAIMS BY THE VARIOUS TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS ON THE ADVANTAGES THAT EACH MAY OFFER ARE GOOD COMPETITION INDUCING EACH TO OFFER A LARGER TONNAGE AND RANGE. STUDIES AND RESEARCH SHOULD BE UNDERTAKEN TO GUIDE THE STATESMEN IN THE INVESTMENT FIELD SO THAT TRANSPORTATION MEANS WILL BE IMPROVED.
