STUDY OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM FOR GRADUATE ENGINEERS VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS

A STUDY WAS MADE OF THE BACKGROUND AND HISTORY OF THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS GRADUATE ENGINEER TRAINING PROGRAM AND PRELIMINARY AND DETAILED QUESTIONNAIRES COVERING ALL ASPECTS OF THE PROGRAM WERE COMPLETED BY TRAINEES AND FORMER TRAINEES, SOME OF WHOM WERE ENROLLED IN 1945. PERSONAL INTERVIEWS WERE HAD WITH APPROXIMATELY 50 PERCENT OF THE SAME GROUP. QUESTIONNAIRES WERE SENT TO OTHER STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENTS TO OBTAIN DATA FOR COMPARISON AND INTERVIEWS WERE HELD WITH SIX OTHER TRAINING PROGRAM DIRECTORS TO DISCUSS STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF APPROXIMATELY SIMILAR PROGRAMS. A SELECTED GROUP OF TRAINEES WHO WERE STILL EMPLOYED BY THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT AND WHO HAD COMPLETED THE PROGRAM WERE CONTACTED A SECOND TIME AND ASKED TO ASSIST BY RECOMMENDING THE MANNER IN WHICH THEY THOUGHT THE VIRGINIA PROGRAM SHOULD BE CONDUCTED. TOP MANAGEMENT AND ENGINEERING STAFF PERSONNEL WERE ALSO ASKED FOR COMMENTS AND OBSERVATIONS. INFORMATION FROM QUESTIONNAIRES, INTERVIEWS, AND LETTERS WAS CATEGORIZED AND CODED FOR ANALYSIS AND IS INCLUDED EITHER IN THE TEXT OR APPENDICES. CONCLUSIONS WERE DRAWN AND RECOMMENDATIONS WERE MADE WITH REFERENCE TO THE FUTURE CONTENT AND CONDUCT OF THE PROGRAM. /AUTHOR/
