TRANSPORTATION POLICY RESEARCH

THIS IS THE SIXTH IN A BIENNIAL SERIES ON POLICY RESEARCH IN THE TRANSPORTATION FIELD. LEADING PERSONS AND INSTITUTIONS IN THE FIELD WERE REQUESTED TO INDICATE WHAT THEY CONSIDERED TO BE POLICY RESEARCH GAPS AND TO SUGGEST PROJECTS THAT SHOULD BE INITIATED TO FILL THE GAPS. THE RESPONSES TENDED TO FALL INTO 16 LARGE SUBJECT AREAS, THE SUGGESTED RESEARCH FOR WHICH IS DESCRIBED. IN ADDITION, THE RESPONSES WERE EVALUATED TO DERIVE A LIST OF TEN MOST WANTED TRANSPORT POLICY RESEARCH PROJECTS, AS FOLLOWS: VALIDITY OF THE COMMON CARRIER CONCEPT UNDER TODAYS'S ECONOMIC CONDITIONS, IMPACT OF CONGLOMERATES ON TRANSPORT CARRIER SERVICES, COSTS AND BENEFITS OF REGULATED INTERCITY SURFACE PASSENGER TRANSPORT, REGULATORY RESTRAINTS AT THE TRANSPORTATION INTERFACE, MEANS OF PROVIDING ADEQUATE SMALL SHIPMENT SERVICE, ROLES OF URBAN TRANSPORTATION MODES, IMPACT OF LABOR WORK RULES ON TRANSPORT SERVICE, PRIORITIES IN THE USE OF TRANSPORT FACILITIES, SIMPLIFICATION AND REDUCTION OF CARGO TRANSPORT RATE REGULATION, AND FUTURE TRANSPORTATION CAPITAL REQUIREMENTS. IN VIEW OF THE INCREASING NUMBER OF ORGANIZATIONS PUBLISHING INFORMATION RELATING TO TRANSPORTATION POLICY, THE SIXTH EDITION ALSO PRESENTS A DETAILED ANALYSIS OF THE SERVICES AVAILABLE FROM THE LARGEST INFORMATION STORAGE AND RETRIEVAL ORGANIZATIONS HANDLING TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION. NINETEEN SEPARATE ORGANIZATIONS ARE SURVEYED, RANGING IN CONVERAGE FROM THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AND NATIONAL TECHNICAL INFORMATION SERVICE TO SPECIALIZED TRANSPORTATION AGENCIES AND THE HIGHWAY RESEARCH INFORMATION SERVICE.
