Integrating intelligent transport systems with bus rapid transit elements

Bus rapid transit (BRT) systems are popular and applications of intelligent transport system (ITS) technologies are assisting to increase its performance. This paper explains the application of appropriate ITS technologies to various operational elements of BRT systems to increase the effectiveness of BRT vehicles with increasing bus speed and reliability concerns associated with BRT operations. It is suggested the different ITS strategiesare suitable for different BRT elements providing system wide benefit. Also, using automatic vehicle location (AVL) as an example, a scheme of possible application for different beneficiaries for different purposes was presented. The marginal benefit depends on the integration of certain type of ITS technology with certain BRT elements at certain stages. Finally, proposals for deploying innovative ITS controlled BRT are described. For the covering abstract see ITRD E140665.
