THE FUTURE OF LONDON TRANSPORT: A PAPER FOR DISCUSSION

THE PROBLEMS OF TRANSPORT STRATEGY FOR LONDON UNDER THE HEADINGS OF HIGHWAY CONGESTION, STAFF RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION, CONCENTRATED RUSH-HOURS, AND FINANCE ARE PRESENTED. POSSIBLE COURSES OF ACTION COMPATIBLE WITH THE GREATER LONDON DEVELOPMENT PLAN ARE DISCUSSED, INCLUDING LEVEL OF SERVICE, FARES STRUCTURE, GRANTS, AND PLANNING AND TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT MEASURES. THE STATED TRANSPORTATION OBJECTIVES OF THE GLDP ARE TO DEVELOP THE HIGHWAY SYSTEM TO CATER EFFICIENTLY FOR THE LARGE VOLUME OF HIGHWAY TRAFFIC, INCLUDING BUSES, WHICH IS ESSENTIAL TO THE PROPER FUNCTIONING OF LONDON, AND AT THE SAME TIME TO IMPROVE PUBLIC TRANSPORT SERVICES IN ALL POSSIBLE WAYS.
