Noise exposure contours for Stansted Airport 2008

The magnitude and extent of the aircraft noise around Stansted airport for 2007 are depicted on maps by contours of constant aircraft noise index (Leq) values. The contours are generated by a computer model validated withnoise measurements, which calculates the emissions and propagation of noise from arriving and departing air traffic. Comparisons are made with 2006. Estimates of the populations within the 2006 contours are based on the 2001 census (updated by CACI in 2005), populations within the 2007 contoursare also based on the 2001 census but updated by CACI in 2006. The average daily aircraft movement rate during the Leq period was 2.3% higher in 2007 than in 2006. The actual modal split or runway direction in 2007 was 72% SW / 28% NE compared with 66% SW / 34% NE in 2006. The standard modal split (20 year average) in 2007 was 71% SW / 29% NE. Relative to 2006, the total area within the actual 2007 terrain adjusted 57dBA Leq (16h) contourincreased from 29.3km to 30.8km, an increase of 5.1% and the population within this contour increased from 2000 to 25000, an increase of 25%.
