Distance-based charging with GPS technology

In this paper, an evaluation test conducted in urban canyon area for distance-based charging by using GPS technology integrated with dead reckoningnavigation is reported. Distance-based charging system using GPS technology is known as the system based on CN/GNSS technology. On-board Unit (OBU)with GPS technology is installed in vehicle to receive signals from GPS satellites. Two kinds of system have been studied for the distance measurement and charge calculation. One system is to process distance measurement and charge calculation at Center system (Thin Client), the other system isto process them in OBU (Smart Client). Regarding the testing for distance-based charging with GPS, several reports have been issued. Most of them are for the systems, measuring travelling distance, detection of cordon line and charge calculation are performed by the Center system using map-matching technology. For the distance-based charging, a prototype system was developed to evaluate the on-board processing for cordon line detection, measuring travelling distance and charge calculation.
