Public Transport in the Helsinki Region

Beginning in 2010, public transport planning and procurement functions in the Helsinki region will be the responsibility of a new single organization, the Helsinki Regional Transport (HSL). This represents a shift from the current incoherent operator-centered public transport system to a pure purchaser-producer model. In addition to public transport provision, HSL will be responsible for long-term transportation system planning. The new system offers several advantages. HSL will allow public transport between the six municipalities that make up the Helsinki area to be developed as an integrated regional whole. It will also be easier to promote integration between different modes of transportation. The long-term goal of the HSL is to provide all residents with good mobility options and ensure a good living environment with reliable transportation.
