THE IMPACT OF HIGHWAY INVESTMENT ON DEVELOPMENT

A RESEARCH PROGRAM IS BEING CONDUCTED ON THE ROLE OF TRANSPORT IN DEVELOPMENT. EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATIONS ARE BEING CONDUCTED ON THE ACTUAL IMPACTS OF SPECIFIC TRANSPORT INVESTMENTS AT PARTICULAR PLACES AND TIMES. RESULTS OF THE FOLLOWING SELECTED CASE STUDIES ARE REPORTED ALONG WITH ANALYSIS OF THE VARIATIONS AND RESULTS OBTAINED FROM TRANSPORT INVESTMENTS: THE COCHABAMBA-SANTA CRUZ HIGHWAY IN BOLIVIA, THE ATLANTIC HIGHWAY IN GUATEMALA, THE LITTORAL HIGHWAY IN EL SAVADOR, AND ADDITIONAL CASES OF HIGHWAY IMPACT. A CRITIQUE OF THE CONCEPTS AND APPROACHES OF WHAT THE CASES SHOW, AND A THEORY OF TRANSPORT AND DEVELOPMENT ARE DISCUSSED.
