Prevalence of Maxillofacial Injuries by Motorized Two Wheeler Road Traffic Accidents in Bangalore City

This article reports on a study undertaken to assess the prevalence of maxillofacial injuries among the victims of motorized two wheeler road traffic accidents in Bangalore city (India). The authors note that motorized two wheelers (MTWs) are the main component of Indian road traffic, constituting 70% of the total vehicles; they are also the most vulnerable group for road fatalities (60 to 80% of fatalities occur in this vehicle population). In this study, the authors evaluated the medical records of cases reported during January 2006–June 2007 to hospitals, collecting data on age, sex, date of trauma, rider or pillion rider, alcohol consumption, site of injury on the face, and associated injuries to other parts of the body. The prevalence of injuries among males and females was in the ratio of 3:1. Most of the injured persons were aged 21–30 years. The most deadly day of the week was Saturday (17.4%) and the most cases were reported in the months of August (9%) and September (9.7%). The distribution of injuries in patients was seen more in bone (57.5%) followed by soft tissues (22.9%) and dentoalveolar (11.1%). Among the maxillofacial injuries, mandibular fractures were most common (34%). The authors comment on a declining trend in the number of maxillofacial injuries from November 2006 onward; they hypothesize that this might be due to the implementation of a mandatory helmet rule in the city. They conclude by reiterating the need for additional education and safety programs, including those on the usage of helmets, not drinking and driving, and the need for adherence to traffic rules during the high-risk periods.
