Nothing Better: Gary Thomas Can't Think of Anything Better than Driving DART

This lengthy article focuses on the achievements of Gary Thomas, President of the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART), and the future of that transit system. The author describes Thomas’ background and his familiarity with the region that the transit system, which opened in 1996, serves. It also describes his management style and how he keeps building out the system on time and on budget. A 20-year financial plan is critical to his success with the system, which employs 3,500 employees. The Green Line, which is the longest light rail project under construction in North America, is currently on schedule and on budget. The Orange Line, which will go out to DFW International Airport should open in 2011, and a Blue Line extension is underway as well.
