Global Air Freight in an Age of Uncertainty

The current economic downturn has had a significant effect on international trade, including the global air freight market. This paper examines the state of the air freight market from the perspective of the larger economy. Forecasts are developed using econometric models that relate economic factors to international trade flows for specific commodities of special interest to air-freight carriers. From the mid-1980s through 2007, world trade averaged a growth rate twice that of world gross domestic product growth. In the short run, the fiscal and monetary stimulus being offered in developed nations should lead to recovery in world trade. Near normal levels of growth in trade will return starting after 2010 and continuing through 2015. The paper includes detailed tables showing air freight demand in key markets as estimated for the current year and for future years through 2015.
