Roads and Wildlife in Finland - E18 Motorway Building and Planning Projects from an Ecological Perspective

Routes Et Faune En Finlande - Projets De Construction Et De Planification De L'Autoroute E18 Dans Une Perspective Ecologique

For many animals, roads and road traffic create problems. Adverse road impact mitigation, fortunately, takes many forms. Building wildlife passages, such as wide underpasses or green bridges, is one popular method. It is important that the environmental perspective be considered throughout the whole road construction process in order to obtain the best final product - or, in other words, a road with minimized impact. The authors discuss construction of the E18 motorway's new western section in Finland. Design and construction endeavored to minimize the project's ecological impact. The authors examine the collision course roads and wildlife are on, as well as road ecology in planning and constructing the E18 Motorway's eastern section. They conclude that biodiversity losses can be prevented by combining research with careful planning to make new E18 roadway permeable for wild animals. In addition to this form of road planning, design, and construction providing benefits for animal populations, it provides traffic safety benefits, since animals are kept off the motorway.
