THE HIGHWAY SYSTEM OF SOUTHERN ONTARIO AND QUEBEC: SOME SIMPLE NETWORK GENERATION MODELS

THIS REPORT SUMMARIZES SOME OF THE INITIAL RESULTS OF THE NETWORK GENERATION MODELS UTILIZED IN THE BELL ENVIRONMENT STUDY. THE REPORT EMPHASIZES MODELS WHICH GENERATE OPTIMAL TRANSPORTATION NETWORKS FOR THE SYSTEM OF CITIES IN SOUTHERN ONTARIO AND QUEBEC, I. E. MODELS WHICH MAXIMIZE A SPATIAL EFFICIENCY CRITERION SUBJECT TO SOME CONSTRAINTS. THE REPORT IS EXPLORATORY AND TO SOME EXTENT PRELIMINARY SINCE MUCH MORE DATA AND COMPUTER TIME WOULD BE NECESSARY TO MAKE THE MODELS REALISTIC ENOUGH TO BE RELIABLE PREDICTORS AND/OR PLANNING TOOLS. A HIGHLY SELF-CRITICAL SUMMARY OF THE APPROACHES USED IN THIS REPORT IS INCLUDED IN SECTION 5. THE MAJOR DEFICIENCIES OF THIS REPORT ARE MADE EXPLICIT IN ORDER TO IDENTIFY AREAS IN WHICH ADDITIONAL WORK SHOULD AND WILL BE UNDERTAKEN. /RATAOC/
