The Long Good Byway

The Carolina Thread Trail is an ambitious project that will link more than two million people across two states with a network of greenways and hiking trails. This article describes this project, which will cover about 500 miles when finished. The project, which involves 144 local governments in 15 counties, will be a web of trails that connect existing and planned local greenways, parks, nature preserves, historic sites, shopping centers and tourist attractions. The vast scale of regional cooperation has been a hallmark of this project. The project will be funded through a combination of private and public funds. Although Thread Trail leaders are providing technical expertise and money, local communities will determine where their trails will be located and how their trails will be used. Although the trails will encourage walking and ease the exploration of nature, the major goal is to preserve open space in North Carolina and South Carolina.
