Traffic Management Strategy for Open E-Lane Operation

This paper describes the development and evaluation of a new traffic management strategy for a future “open e-Lane” scenario which is one of “Traffic management Strategies for automated transport systems” developed in the EC Citymobil project. The scenario is regarded as a migratory stage towards full automation, where dual mode vehicles in automated driving mode share the road space with other manual (driver controlled) vehicles. The mixed traffic conditions will limit the possible benefits of traffic operation from driving automation unless complementary measures are introduced. To explore the potential for such measures, a new traffic management strategy was developed to optimize open e-Lane operation. The impacts were investigated using a be-spoke microscopic simulation model. It was found that under the new traffic management scheme, open e-Lane operation can be improved in terms of both travel time and capacity.
