Pipe Choices. Sorting Through Pipe Materials, Applications and Suppliers

Because pipe is a common and necessary component of many infrastructure systems, there is a wide choice of materials available. This report provides information on the different types of pipe that civil engineers can choose from for water projects. National associations representing the eight most commonly used types of pipe -- concrete, corrugated steel, ductile iron, fiberglass, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, steel, and vitrified clay -- responded to questions about their material. The association representatives commented on the applications and environments that particularly favor the use of their material, how the performance and/or application has changed during the last 5 to 10 years, how that material can contribute to a project's sustainable design or LEED certification goals and what resources are available from the association to aid engineers. Major manufacturers of each type of pipe are listed for reference.
