AREA HIGHWAY PLANNING STUDIES: A SERIES OF SEPARATE REPORTS

THE DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS OF ONTARIO HAS EMBARKED ON A NEW CONCEPT IN HIGHWAY PLANNING, THAT OF AREA PLANNING STUDIES. THE PROVINCE IS DIVIDED INTO 19 STUDY AREAS. FOR EACH AREA THE PRESENT AND FUTURE ROAD NEEDS ARE BEING EVALUATED. THE MAJOR SOURCES OF DATA ARE ORIGIN-DESTINATION STUDIES AND LAND USE SURVEYS WHICH ARE USED TO FORECAST FUTURE TRAVEL. THE PURPOSE OF THESE STUDIES IS TO CO- ORDINATE AND INTEGRATE THE PROVINCES RURAL ROAD NETWORK WITH THE URBAN TRANSPORTATION PLANS NOW BEING DEVELOPED IN ALL MAJOR URBAN CENTRES. PRIORITIES AND PROGRAM SCHEDULES ARE ALSO ESTABLISHED. COMPUTER PROGRAMMING HAS MADE POSSIBLE A PROJECT OF THIS SCOPE AND MAGNITUDE. FORMERLY, THE TIME TAKEN TO EVALUATE ANY DATA COLLECTED WOULD HAVE BEEN PROHIBITIVE. THE STUDIES PROJECT NEEDS AND DEVELOPMENT OVER THE NEXT 20 TO 25 YEARS. THE RESULTS OF THESE INVESTIGATIONS ARE PUBLISHED IN SEPARATE REPORTS FOR EACH AREA. FOUR REPORTS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED AS OF NOVEMBER 1966 AND EIGHT OTHERS ARE NOW BEING CARRIED OUT. THE AREAS FOR WHICH REPORTS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED ARE: 1/ EASTERN ONTARIO; 2/ NIAGARA PENINSULA 3/ BRANTFORD 4/ LONDON. ALL REPORTS HAVE APPROXIMATELY THE SAME SCOPE AND CONTENTS. /CGRA/
