ONTARIOS TOURIST INDUSTRY

ALTHOUGH THIS BOOK IS DEVOTED PRIMARILY TO AN ANALYSIS OF THE POTENTIALS AND PROBLEMS OF THE TOURIST INDUSTRY IN THE PROVINCE OF ONTARIO, CHAPTER 24 IS DEVOTED TO A DISCUSSION OF THE RELATIONSHIP OF ROADS TO TOURISM. IT CONTAINS RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF ROAD SIGNING, ROADSIDE BEAUTIFICATION, ROADSIDE PARKS AND REST AREAS, TOURIST INFORMATION AND RESORT ADVERTISING AND DIRECTION SIGNS ADJACENT TO HIGHWAYS. IT IS STATED THAT COMPLETION OF THE TRANS-CANADA HIGHWAY ROUTE TO ACCEPTED STANDARDS WILL PROBABLY DO MORE FOR INTER-PROVINCIAL AND INTERNATIONAL TOURISM, ESPECIALLY ITS EASTWARD FLOW, THAN TEN YEARS OF INTENSIVE PUBLICITY. IT IS ALSO NOTED THAT THE ONTARIO DEPT. OF HWYS NOW HAS AN AVERAGE OF ONE PICNIC SITE FOR EVERY TWELVE MILES OF HIGHWAY AND THESE ROADSIDE PARKS CONTAIN MORE THAN 3,850 PICNIC TABLES. /CGRA/
