USE OF CPM ON ROAD CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS

CRITICAL PATH METHOD AND SIMILAR TECHNIQUES ARE USED WIDELY, BUT NOT YET ON ROAD CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS, POSSIBLY BECAUSE PEOPLE FEEL THAT THESE ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR PRECISION APPLICATION OF C.P.M., DUE TO VULNERABILITY OF COMPLETION TIMES. SOME CASE STUDIES ARE USED TO ILLUSTRATE PROBLEMS OF USING C.P.M. AND EVALUATION OF ITS USE. A BRIEF REVIEW IS ALSO GIVEN OF THE SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF C.P.M., AND GENERAL APPLICATIONS. THERE HAS BEEN A TENDENCY FOR USERS OF C.P.M. ON ROAD CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS TO MOVE FROM LARGE COMPLICATED NETWORK DIAGRAMS TO SMALLER ONES DRAWN ON BROAD LINES, SEPARATE DIAGRAMS BEING USED FOR DETAILED PROJECTS SUCH AS BRIDGES. WEATHER DELAYS CAUSED NO DIFFICULTIES. MOVE FROM LARGE TO SMALL NETWORKS PERMITTED MANUAL COMPUTATION, BUT COMPUTERS MAY COME TO BE USED EVEN FOR SMALL NETWORKS. C.P.M. IS USEFUL FOR ROADS IF ITS LIMITATIONS ARE REALIZED. FUTURE POSSIBLE TRENDS, INCLUDING USE IN PLANNING STAGES, ARE DISCUSSED. /RRL/
