HIGHWAY TRANSPORTATION AND THE QUALITY OF THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT

IN ITS ANALYSIS OF THE STATE-OF-THE-ART OF INFORMATION RELATING HIGHWAY TRANSPORTATION TO QUALITY OF THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT, BATELLE INSTITUTE LISTED FIVE CATEGORIES OF ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: ECOLOGICAL FACTORS, ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION, AESTHETIC FACTORS, HUMAN INTEREST, AND ACCESS. THESE ARE TO BE APPLIED TO FOUR STAGES OF THE HIGHWAY DEVELOPMENT PROCESS--SYSTEM DESIGN, CORRIDOR AND ROUTE LOCATION, DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION, AND USE AND MAINTENANCE. RESEARCH NEEDS WERE EVALUATED ON THE BASIS OF THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN INFORMATION ON ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY AND THE NEEDS OF HIGHWAY PLANNERS. /AUTHOR/
