The Guadalajara Macrobus System's Contribution to Improved Mobility

The public transportation system of Guadalajara, Mexico has been overwhelmed in recent decades by the population growth of the metropolitan area and the resulting increase in travel demand. The city had two electric train lines, but the bus system was inadequate in terms of service frequency, fare collection and security. In March 2007, the Jalisco state government launched a plan called Macrobus. Macrobus is a system of articulated buses and bus lanes with the stated aim of ensuring rapid, comfortable, safe and environmentally-friendly transportation. Macrobus was conceived as a system to complement the electric train system. The Macrobus service began service in March 2009. The service consists of 27 stations and 16 km of corridors. Forty-one articulated buses travel on a dedicated Macrobus lane along one of the most important streets in the city. The system offers a prepayment system based on an electronic card system. Buses are monitored from a control center using radio frequency and global positioning systems that provide information on compliance with timetables, speed, journey times and routes. Stations are equipped with high-tech security systems. The system currently transports approximately 130,000 passengers daily. Another network of 3 bus corridors is planned by 2012.
