EBSF: Bus System Review from A to Z

This article describes the European Bus System of the Future (EBSF), a wide-scale project co-funded by the European Commission for research and technological development of the next generation of bus systems. The EBSF applies a systemic approach by looking at bus systems consisting of state-of-the-art vehicles, infrastructures and innovative operations in specific European contexts in an integrated way. The project imagines a bus network built on a hierarchal foundation consisting of a few main lines that offer quick and regular service, traditional lines to ensure a meshed service, secondary lines to feed the main lines, local service lines, and demand-responsive lines. EBSF will test the new bus service concept in 6 European cities. The bus systems that result from the project will respond to the needs of passengers, public authorities and operators. The goal is to create a high-performance urban bus system that will change urban mobility.
