GIS and Advanced Optimization. A Matter of Life and Death

As resources become sparse, it is all the more important to effectively utilize existing ones. If the operation is ambulance dispatch, then this means ensuring that every ambulance is located in an advantageous position at all times. Ambulance dispatchers are key players in every emergency management system (EMS), as they decide which ambulances to send to each patient. They are also responsible for keeping the ambulances favorably positioned, and thus decide if the ambulances need to be relocated to better cover various parts of the area of responsibility. This paper presents how geographic information system (GIS) can support and optimize the dispatcher role.
